Fall Sunshine
While the days are getting noticeably shorter we are enjoying the fall sunshine here on Long Island. The colors have begun to change but we still have a way to go. Long Island potatoes, cauliflower and broccoli have begun to come in to the stores from out east. The temps can call for a sweatsuit in the morning and flip flops and shorts on the same afternoon. Thanksgiving is on the horizon and yet we are still enjoying summer's remnants. That is one of a million reasons why this is the most unique island in the world.

Long Island Memorial Daze
I speak as one who has spent 44 Memorial Days here on this Island just outside of the city. Miuch has changed but still some things remain. Many Long Islanders prefer to stay at home on this busy weekend. Backyard BBQs are for the end of the day after the jobs are done, jobs such as opening pools and planting flowers, jobs of putting together something or moving woodchips.
My activities today consisted of going for an early morning run, marching in the parade, putting around the garden, helping my son-in-law move some woodchips and heaidng to a BBQ at their home later.

Its the summer season on Long Island and we are celebrating!

Spring on the Island
Amidst the blooming forsythia and budding weeping willow,
The flowers of crocus and the buds of daffodils,
The sound of the blackbird singing its masterpiece,
The clean crisp air and the hint of much more botanical display,
My soul is renewed and heart filled with praise
to the Maker of all of these treasures.

January Weather or Not?
For the fish pond to thaw out in January, our coldest month is highly unusual. Must be global warming. :-) Long Island winters are great. There is not too much snow but enough and we do get a spring tease in the most frigid part of the year. We'll be dropping back to the normal temperatures over the weekend, but that is okay- January is supposed to be cold.
Spring will soon be here on the Island.
We who live here love it here.

How Do You Like Winter?
My answer to a question from a fellow Long Islander this morning:
I love the birds that come to my feeders (check out my blog!). I love the cold. I can always get warmer enough but in the summer you can only cool down to a certian extent. I love the lessening of perspiration (Remember you asked). Since I love being outside (you gotta see my outside office at the picnic table in the backyard this summer), the cold ... See cold weather forces me to stay inside and journal like I did yesterday. I love the foods of winter: roast turkey, hot homemade soups, and corned beef and cabbage. I love the citris fruit. I love the city in winter. Summer I die there! I love winter clothing too!
