More About Coach Jim Murrin
A bit of a different post this morning. I want to encourage all of you who work with children or teenagers whether you coach, teach, lead a scouting group or whatever.
My friends and the Bellmore Community lost a great coach yesterday. My good friend, Robert Sanfilippo, called to tell me the news. Last night here on Facebook tributes and memories were shared about Coach Jim Murrin. They will continue throughout the weekend and as we gather Sunday afternoon to pay our final respects.
He had a tremendous influence on an entire generation. I always think about him when I pass Jerusalem Avenue Junior High School on Southern State Parkway.
He was dedicated. I can still see him out there in the cold wet early spring weather, on the practice football field having us run sprints down to him as he waved his hands for us to run. I can see him at the finish line of the last race I ran in 9th grade.
He called us to be our best. He would not accept anything less. 45 years later he still influences all who he coached. He had patience with us. He made everyone feel a part of the team. Like Robert and others said, he was the one we would go back to see when we visited our former school.
Working with children and teens is more of a challenge today. Much more! But we need the Jim Murrins among us! So when you feel overwhelmed and exhausted from your work with them, remember the big picture. The things you say, the things you do, the way you lead are going to have a positive impact on those kids their whole lives, much more than you can imagine! Keep up the good work!
Coach Jim Murrin, Jerusalem Avenue Junior High School
We lost a great coach today. Coach Jim Murrin coached at Jerusalem Avenue Junior High School back in the turbulent 1960's and 70's. He coached track, wrestling, and football.
On the day we were being weighed and measured for our height he said to me as I stepped off the scale, "Mancini, how come you didn't go out for track?" I answered, "I don't know." He responded, "Go out for the team." I did and it changed the rest of my school years.
Coach Murrin was one tough coach. He did not put up with any nonsense. He worked us hard and expected us to do our best.
You never had to try and figure out what he meant because he spoke straight and to the point.
He leaves us all with personal memories of running, wrestling and playing football for him, Jerusalem Ave. and giving it our all.
Thanks Coach!!

Fall on Long Island
Many have called Long Island's Autumn its best kept secret. The days are in the 70's with nights in the high 50's. The humidity is low. Late blooming flowers abound. Its the second week in October and the leaves have not really begun to change yet. My nephew who recently migrated south from Buffalo said to me yesterday, "I can't believe how green everything is still."

A Long Island State of Mind
Thursday, August 16, 2012
A Swallow dove for me then turned at the minute. The splash pool was empty. The sun rose quietly. A lady was at the water's edge sitting looking over across the bay to the barrier island and the lighthouse.
I love Long Island's south shore.

Last Evening's Thunderstorms
Yesterday afternoon we got hit with some tremendous storms, knocking out power and causing local flooding. I happened to be in my Bronco with 2 grandkids when they rolled in. We had gone to the Great South Bay to swim and had enjoyed some fun when the dark clouds rolled in. The kids wanted to stay and watch the storm come so we did. Lightening was striking all over. Wind and rain came. It was a sight! Watching it with two children I dearly love added to the excitement.
Life can bring storms. Sometimes it can bring a steady rain. Financial trouble in this economy is widespread. Stress on families is great. Sometimes an ongoing medical condition can bring unspeakable steady stress. I love the saying my daughter has up in her living room. "Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass. It is learning to dance in the rain."
Jesus told about two men, a foolish one and a wise one. The foolish built his house on the sand, the wise on the rock. The storms came, the floods rose and beat against both homes. The foolish one's came down with a crash while the house on the rock stood firm. He is the Rock of Ages. Build your life on him and you will weather life's storms.

Roosevelt Field
Life was certainly much simpler back then. We didn't have all the technology we have today. We talked and played more together.
Can I suggest something to those who are parents, grandparents and uncles and aunts? Children still very much need and want time, our undivided attention and to be with them, enjoying what they enjoy. It is amazing how Little League is still Little League and how the backyard is still an adventure for kids when an adult is there to converse with them.
Father's Day is a week from Sunday. Children are in need of their Dad. Some do not have one. Be a Dad to them! If you have children, grandkids or other relatives who are young, the moments spent with them are priceless.
Some thoughts from the Island this day.

The Four Seasons
Life is full of seasons. Change is something we must adjust to or we are in for some difficult times emotionally. Loss is part of life. So are new things.
In the changes you are experiencing now, one thing is certain: Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever! Look to Him this day!
